Charles L. "Charlie" Hellwig, 57, of Maderia Beach, Fla., formerly of Fremont, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at St. Petersburg General Hospital after collapsing while riding his bicycle on the Pinellas Trail.

Hellwig was born in Cape Girardeau, Mo., and moved from Omaha to Maderia Beach in 1998. He retired as a tech sergeant from the U.S. Air Force where he served in Spain and had two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was a graphics illustrator serving as the director of the Sign Shop at VAMC in Bay Pines.

He was a member of the Clearwater Community Sailing Club and the Florida Tandem & Touring Society.

Survivors include: his wife, Veronika "Roni" Reilly Hellwig; two daughters, Melanie Hellwig of Lincoln and Rebecca Hellwig of Omaha; his mother, Jane Bannister of Largo, Fla.; and a sister, Sally Stavolta of Burlington, Md.
