Hellwig was born in Cape Girardeau, Mo., and moved from Omaha to Maderia Beach in 1998. He retired as a tech sergeant from the U.S. Air Force where he served in Spain and had two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was a graphics illustrator serving as the director of the Sign Shop at VAMC in Bay Pines.
He was a member of the Clearwater Community Sailing Club and the Florida Tandem & Touring Society.
Survivors include: his wife, Veronika "Roni" Reilly Hellwig; two daughters, Melanie Hellwig of Lincoln and Rebecca Hellwig of Omaha; his mother, Jane Bannister of Largo, Fla.; and a sister, Sally Stavolta of Burlington, Md.
