GULFPORT - Bernice R. Perry, a former Gulfport city clerk who held several challenging jobs during the 15 years she worked for the federal government, has died at 87. Mrs. Perry, who served briefly as acting city manager in 1972, died Thursday (May 17, 2001) at Palms of Pasadena Hospital. A private pilot, she served during World War II in the Civil Air Patrol. She also investigated subversive activities for the Office of Strategic Services. After the war, she was an employee relations officer for the War Assets Administration, which was responsible for distributing surplus materials. A native of Edwardsville, Ill., she came here in 1953 from Brooklyn, N.Y., and became active in Gulfport clubs. She worked in the old Gulfport Civic Association, Women's Club and Pinellas County Women's Republican Club. She led Girl Scout Troop 9. When she became city clerk, she had to abandon all those activities. In 1981, she stepped down after 16 years as city clerk and said she looked forward to an easy adjustment to retirement and to returning to gardening and club activities. She was a member of the Association of Former Intelligence Officers.
