Died of Typhoid Fever in Petersburg, Va., May, 1863. (this would have been prior to the siege 1864-65)

The first photo is not specifically James Denman's grave. The mass graves on Memorial Hill are not marked individually, there are simply state markers in each area for soldiers whose state of origin was known, and "unknown" markers for areas were the soldiers could not be identified. Since James Denman's burial was noted to be in the Georgia section, that is the only marker denoting the approximate area of his burial. There is a directory online of burials at Blandford, including the small percentage of identified Confederates - it can be found here (http://www.interment.net/data/us/va/petersburg/blandford-cemetery.htm).

After having successfully obtained a Veterans Administration memorial grave marker for another civil war ancestral grandfather, I attempted in 2017 to do the same for this person, James L. Denman, my g-g-grandfather. I went through the same process, filled out the same paperwork, obtained proof of his being in the military, and of his dying in service and never being returned home. He was buried in a communal grave area at Blandford Cemetery. I have National Park Service papers and City of Petersburg papers to prove his death and burial. However, the VA turned down my request for a marker to be placed next to his widow's grave in Georgia. I contacted my two Georgia Senators and my Congressman to help me. I received letters from them and the VA stating that soldiers of the Confederate States of America will NO LONGER be given memorial markers by the VA, because it has been determined [when and by whom was not stated] that they do not qualify as the VA Code is currently worded, since CSA soldiers were NOT soldiers of the United States.

Update to the above paragraph: In 2018 I purchased at my own expense a memorial stone to be placed in the family cemetery in Georgia (see here).

He had six known children:
Sarah Catherine b. 1852 (m Stephen ?)
Nancy E. b. 9 Sep 1853 (m Clark M Franks b.1852)
George Andrew b. 26 Apr 1856 (m 8-1-1880 Mary Price b. 1865)
James Patrick b. 15 Feb 1857 (m Naomi A Lewis b.1861)
Judge Harrison b. 8 Sept 1858 (m Frances A Daniel b.1861)
Alvin J b. 17 May 1863 (m Kate Garner b. 1863)
