Son of Stephen & Rhoda Ann (Wright) Cottrell, husband of (1)Anna Brown, (2)Catherine Jane Welch. William Cottrell was one of the group in the Red Rock Mining Co. who traveled by mule to the California gold fields in 1849.

Mr. William Cottrell died Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sarchfield, in Des Moines. The remains were brought to his old home in this city Monday where the funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Cottrell was one of the oldest residents of Prairie City, where he had raised a large family. His wife died several years ago. The interment was in the Prairie City Cemetery beside his faithful wife.
