Vern's death occurred Friday, August 24, 2001 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa after a sudden illness. He was seventy-one years old. Vern was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner and had served on the Parish Council. He enjoyed woodworking, playing computer games, traveling, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Vern is survived by his wife, Barbara of Sumner; seven children and their spouses, Rodney and Kristy of Sumner; Debra and Gary Griffith of Richmond, Virginia; Dan of Iowa City; Cheryl and Gary Sheldon of Dubuque; Michael of Sumner; Cathy of Cedar Rapids; and Joe and Elly of Sumner; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and three sisters, Marcella Wheeler of Cedar Falls; Veryl Schares of New Hampton; and Ramona Menuey of Fairbank, Iowa.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents.
