Her first marriage was to Henry Hagar who died in 1855. The known children from her first marriage to Henry were William, born about 1841, burial unknown & the following children linked to her memorial, Peter, John, Jacob, Sarah, and Charlotte.
Sarah was in a terrible carriage accident in 1893 that took the life of her husband, David. She was hurt badly but survived to live another 9 years although her obituary in the Belvidere Apollo, dated Jan. 3, 1902, indicates her health had never been very good since the accident. The obituary also mentioned that she was the daughter of the late William Hamlin of Lopatcong who was at one time county collector.
**Her death certificate from Trenton NJ lists her date of death as December 29, 1901 in Harmony Township. I believe based on this information, the date of death on her gravestone was her date of burial. **
Belvidere Apollo 1.3.1902, page 3, col.4:
Mrs. Sarah R. Amey, widow of the late David Amey, died on Sunday morning at her home at Harmony, from a complication of diseases, aged about seventy-eight years. Mrs. Amey sustained a fall at her home a short time ago, and the accident tended to hasten her end. Seven or eight years ago, while Mrs. Amey and her husband were driving on Northampton Street, Easton, their carriage was run into by a coal wagon, the horses of which had been left untied and had run away. Both were severely injured and Mr. Amey died several days afterwards at the Easton Hospital. Mrs. Amey's life was saved, but her health has not been of the best since that accident.
Mrs. Amey was the daughter of the late William Hamlin of Lopatcong, who was at one time county collector. She is survived by one son and one daughter, by her first husband, Peter H. Hagar of Phillipsburg, N.J., and Mrs. Isaac Fry(Frey) of Carpentersville. Two sons and two daughters by her second husband, George Amey and Matthew Amey of Upper Harmony; Mrs. Newman Jones of Oxford and Mrs. Fred Mackey of Belvidere, also survive together with her stepmother, Mrs William Hamlin of Easton, and these sisters and brothers; Mrs. Henry Carpenter, Mrs. Geo. Walters, both of Phillipsburg; Mrs. Evan Knecht of Easton; Mrs. A.M. Young of Hampton; Mrs. John Angel of Holland; Mrs. James Smith of Bloomsbury; John Hamlin, George Hamlin and Cyrus Hamlin of Phillipsburg; Edward Hamlin of Uniontown; Robert Hamlin of New York, and Mahlon Hamlin of Newark.
