Alvin C. "Lunk" Hammer, 78, of Fostoria, passed away at 10:57 a.m. Monday, April 12, 2010, at Independence House, Fostoria.

He was born March 17, 1932, in Fostoria, to Frank S. and Mary (Yost) Hammer. He married Margaret "Bill" Frisch May 6, 1961, at St. James Catholic Church in Kansas, Ohio, and she survives in Fostoria.

Also surviving are two sons, Jeff F. Hammer of New Riegel and Jerry P. Hammer of Fostoria; daughter, Carla R. (Don) Torok of Fostoria; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two sisters, Alice Hark and Mary Adelsperger of Fostoria; brother, Ralph (Irma) Hammer of Fostoria; and sister-in-law, Mildred Hammer of Fostoria.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Albert and his twin Melvin Hammer; and two infant grandsons.

Mr. Hammer retired after 41 years of service at Union Carbide in Fostoria. He was a life member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church, a member of the New Riegel American Legion and Fostoria Vagabond Campers. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from January 1952 to December 1953. He enjoyed farming, fishing and camping.

Visitation is 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 15, 2010, at Hoening Funeral Home, 242 W. Tiffin St., Fostoria, where a Christian wake service will be at 3:45 p.m. and an American Legion memorial service at 7:45 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial is 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 16, 2010, at St. Wendelin Catholic Church, where a rosary will be prayed at 10 a.m. Military honors will follow the Mass at church.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association or St. Wendelin Catholic Church.
