Joseph Henry Kawel (son of John Kawel and Anna Maria Collier) was born about 1844 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War as a Private in Company E of the 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment. He enlisted 17 Sep 1862 and died 9 Aug 1864 of malnutrition (scurvy) at the Prison Camp near Andersonville, Sumter County, Georgia. He was buried at Andersonville Cemetery.
