Served in the War of 1812 as a volunteer with the West Tennessee Mounted Gunmen. Dispatched to Florida due to an Indian problem. Then ordered to New Orleans and became mired in quicksand with their horses in Florida. The men ate the inside of the bark of trees until they finally were able to get free of the quicksand. They rested for more than a week as both the horses and men were near death. When they arrived at the east side of the Mississippi River across from New Orleans, they were told to halt. They heard the cannon fire that ended the Battle of New Orleans and the War of 1812. They were decommissioned in Mississippi and had to find their own way back home to Giles Co., TN. This per Widow Pension papers. Wife Rebecca Keltner Fanning's birthdate is believed by Keltner researchers to have been 1/1/1794. Levi Fanning's birth year is believed to have been 1809. Per YDNA, Levi was actually a stepson of George.
Birth dates of the older children are in the National Archives in the Widow Pension papers: George W. Jr (10/5/1813), John Keltner (11/18/1816), Joseph Davis (3/17/1818), Henry L. (8/29/1819), Ephraim (4/14/1821) and Samuel Andrew(11/25/1822).
