He was the owner and operator of W. G. Acker Candy Company for thirty-five years, retiring in 1985 due to illness. Grady was in the United States Navy during World War II, serving in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea for about 3 years, then went to the Pacific Ocean and then to Okinawa. He was a charter member of Temple Baptist Church that was organized in 1973 in a cattle barn at the Fair Grounds. He served on the deacon board several terms and also served as treasurer for twenty-five years.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Frances Shaw and Sarah Smith and a brother, Ralph Acker.
