ALEXANDRIA — William B. "Bill" Whetsel, 88, Alexandria, died April 13, 2010, at the Alexandria Care Center.

Bill was born July 12, 1921, in Dunkirk, the son of Harry W. and Hazel M. (Haley) Whetsel. He graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1940. On Nov. 8, 1942, he married his high school sweetheart, Treva M. (Clark) Whetsel.

After 35 years of service, Bill retired from Indiana Gas Co., in 1984.

Bill was always involved in civic affairs and community service while living in Dunkirk. He was first elected a Dunkirk City Councilman in 1968 and second term in 1972. In 1976, Bill was elected Mayor of Dunkirk and served one term. He was a member of the Dunkirk Kiwanis Club, Bethel United Methodist Church where he served as the church treasurer for 38 years. He attended the First Baptist Church of Alexandria.

Bill loved to go fishing and camping, especially with his grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are . . ..

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Jama Roseann; a brother, Kenneth L. Whetsel; a sister, Rosemary Taylor; and a great-grandson, Drew Myers.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Alexandria with the Revs. Michael Deutsch and Randy Davis officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Dunkirk.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Whetsel Funeral Service, 1503 S. Park Ave., Alexandria, and one hour before service Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be made to the Bethel UM Church, First Baptist Church of Alexandria, or the Resident's Activity Fund of the Alexandria Care Center in care of the funeral home.

Bill's family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of the Alexandria Care Center for their compassionate care for Bill.
