James Marion was born to William Ramsey Buchanan and Margaret (Stiles). He married Martha Patsy (Cowan) on April 3, 1841 in Macon County, NC. They had four children: James Jasper, Leander, Charles, and Joseph. He married a second time to Susannah Clemmons on October 4, 1870 in Jackson County NC. He was a farmer.
