George Robert Carroll, Sr. son of Robert and Nancy Carroll was born October 26, 1871, near Castana, Iowa.

He lived his entire life in Monona County with the exception of five years in which he and his family resided in Roberts County, South Dakota. He had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. C.W. McClatchey for the last five years.

He was married to Mary Jane Allen October 26, 1892 at Onawa. Eleven children were born to this union. His wife and one daughter preceded him in death.

Mr. Carroll died Monday, May 24, 1954, at the Lutheran hospital in Sioux City after a lingering illness, having reached the age of 82 years, 6 months and 28 days.

He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Alfred Rasmussen of Ida Grove, Iowa, Mrs. Lawrence Funkhouser of Whiting, Iowa, Mrs. Harry Petersen of Mapleton and Mrs. Christy McClatchey of Mapleton; six sons, Ray, Floyd and George Jr. of Mapleton, William of Blencoe, Allen of Schleswig and Woodrow of Charter Oak; two sisters, Mrs. Charles Johnson of Smithland and Mrs. Clyde Tacy of Council Bluffs; three brothers, Henry of Smithland, Thomas of Formosa, S.D. and Eugene of Meadow Grove, Nebraska; 44 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 26, 1954 at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church in Mapleton. Rev Eugene Hancock, pastor of the church and Rev. Everett Epperson, pastor of the Christian church at Onawa, officiated.

Interment was made in the Center Cemetery at Castana. Byers-Walter funeral home of Mapleton had charge of arrangements.
