Elias Baker was born 1815 in New Jersey, possibly in Elizabeth, Union County, but was raised in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, NJ. He was 2nd of 4 known surviving children (2 boys/2 girls) born to silversmith, Samuel Baker and his unknown first wife.

Elias' mother died sometime between 1826-1828 and he was about age 13 when his 42-year old widowed father married 32-year old Elizabeth FitzRandolph, of the prominent FitzRandolph family of Piscataway and New Brunswick. His father and stepmother would soon add 3 more sons to the family.

Elias followed in his father's footsteps, entering the silversmith trade from an early age, honing his craft in his father's store, but later opening his own store on Church Street. His business included watch-making, jewelry, and silversmithing. He later took over the New Brunswick business of noted German-born jeweler and silvermsith, Peter Lupp (Leupp) following his death.

Elias delayed marriage for some years, and it wasn't until about 1858 that he took a bride. He was about age 43 when he married 46-year old Sarah P. Bancroft, daughter of Philadelphia merchant, James Bancroft and his wife, Rebecca Smith. The couple would quickly have two sons: James Barwyn Baker (ca. 1859) and Frederick Baker (ca. 1864).

Elias died on August 19, 1871 at age 56. Eight days later his wife of 13 years died on August 27, 1871. They were both buried in Willow Grove. It is not known what became of their sons.
