He came to California in 1906, following his brother James Ira Denney. Arthur was a logger (hook-tender) with the Madera-Sugar Pine Lumber Company during the spring, summer and early fall months and then was a ranchhand on local ranches during the remainder of the year.
When Arthur married Theresa, he took over Summit House/Dapello Ranch which was owned by Theresa's mother Jane (Mann) Footman. Jane Footman passed in November of 1945 while living with Arthur and Theresa at the Summit House. When Theresa died, the ranch was lost to the State of California for back taxes.
