Born in Pennsylvania. Lived with his family in Florida during the Depression, where he excelled in tennis. Returned to Philadelphia area after his father died, and lived with his aunt. Enlisted in the Army Air Corps, learned to fly and earned his wings at Luke Field in Phoenix, and then transferred to Victorville as a pursuit instructor in a P-39. Was killed in the crash of his plane on 7-29-1944.
