Deceased Name: Capt. Marie B. Kelleher
Capt. Marie B. Kelleher, USN (retired) 86, of Sandwich, died Thursday, February 28, 2008. A descendent of two glass factory worker's families, she was born and raised in Sandwich. She was a 1938 graduate of Sandwich High School and a 1942 graduate of UMass Amherst, majoring in Chemistry. She worked as a chemist at Polaroid before joining the Navy in December of 1942. In February 1943 she was commissioned an Ensign. Her Navy duty stations included the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, Newport, RI, San Diego, CA and Washington, D.C. In 1958, she earned her Master's degree from Stanford University. In February 1971 she retired from the Navy as a Captain. Marie was one of the first seven Navy women promoted to Permanent Captain. She was awarded the American Area Campaign, World War II Victory, National Defense Service and Navy Commendation medals. While studying for a PhD. at American University, she was offered the position of Vice President, Personnel at USAA, a military-client insurance company, in San Antonio, Texas. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter appointed her to the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Service, where she served for 3 years, the last year as Co-Chair. In 1982, she received a Distinguished Professional Service Award from UMass. After her retirement from USAA in 1983, she resided part-time in Sandwich until 1995, when she moved to the Cape permanently. She lived in her grandparent's home until she entered Cape Heritage Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in 1999. In San Antonio, she was a Life Member of the Board of the Children's Hospital Foundation, a board member of the National Conference of Christians & Jews and the B&PW Club. She also served on the Personnel Committee of the National Association of Independent Insurers. On the Cape, she was a member of the Retired Officer's Association, Navy League, American Legion Post 188 and WAVES National. She was a supporter of many arts organizations and was a former member of the Cape Cod Chorale. She was a communicant of Corpus Christi Parish. During retirement, she traveled extensively, visiting all states and their capitals, all continents and over 50 countries. She also enjoyed music and theater.
