Alabama Civil War Muster Rolls, 1861-1865: James Marion Britnell served in the 4th, 5th and 10th Alabama Cavalry Regiments, CSA.
"The Roster," lists the men of Company E., 4th Alabama Cavalry, General P. D. Roddey's Brigade. The company was organized on 14 Sep 1862 at Spencer Bell's blacksmith shop. J. M. Britnell was the 2nd Lt of the company and was replaced by Pvt. S.L. Corsbie upon resignation. The only Britnell in the 4th Alabama (Fold3) records, was S. Britnell, who was elected 2nd Lt., of the company on 7 Sep 1862 and resigned on 1 Apr 1863. His successor was S. L. Corsbie, above. Corsbie was promoted again on 5 Feb 1864 and his successor was W. Petree. No further records for S. Britnell. The company was discharged from the Confederate Service on 17 May 1865 at Pond Springs, Lawrence County, now Wheeler Station. At the surrender, S. L. Corsbie was the 1st Lt., and W. R. Petree was the 2nd Lt., of the company.J. W. Britnell age 33, enrolled in Capt Clark's Co., E of the 5th Alabama Cavalry on 6 Sep 1862.J. M. Britnell entered Confederate service in Sep 1862 and was elected 2nd Lt., of Company A, 10th Alabama Cavalry on 5 Aug 1863.It appears that J. M. Britnell of the 4th Ala., J. W. Britnell of the 5th Ala., and J. M. Britnell of the 10th Ala., are the same man, namely James Marion Britnell, born 1828. It also appears the soldier identified as S. Britnell, 2nd Lt., of the 4th Ala., who resigned on 1 Apr 1863 and was replaced by Pvt. S. L. Corsbie is James Marion Britnell. Some researchers have confused William Silmon Britnell, a brother of James Marion Britnell as being the S. Britnell of the 4th Ala., claiming he deserted and enlisted in the 1st Alabama Cavalry (Union) which is incorrect. William Silmon Britnell enlisted in the 1st Ala., on 29 Oct 1862 which is six months before S. Britnell resigned from the 4th Ala.
