Married—At Orwell, Vermont, on July 10, 1888, by Rev. Walter, Rice, of Brandon, Mr. H. A. Royce, cashier of the Traders' Bank of Kirwin, Kansas, and Miss Lena Helen Abbey were married in the presence of a small company of family friends.

In speaking of the wedding, the Rutland, Vermont, Herald says: "The presents were numerous, useful and beautiful, including a silver tea service from the Traders' Bank. The gift which seemed most fitting, eliciting many favorable remarks from the guests and expressions of gratitude from the happy couple as they recalled other tokens of regard, was from the 40 church people who gave $60 in cash. Yet all this material good only hints at the profusion of good wishes and fervent prayers that follow these young people to their new home, where in business, in society and in church all confidently expect them to become a power for good.

The following from a personal friend of Mr. Royce expresses the sentiments of the CHIEF exactly:

Mr. and Mrs. Royce arrived in Kirwin Monday morning and immediately repaired to their neat little home at the corner of Genesee and West Second Streets.

The many friends of the happy couple wish them a peaceful and prosperous journey through life, and may they always remember that in the dark vicissitudes of life they can always find comfort and happiness in that love which binds husband and wife together. And when old age shall have streaked their heads with silver may they look back o'er the past:

When Time, who steals our years away,
Shall steal our pleasures too,
The memory of the past will stay
And half our joys renew.

Howard Archibald Royce, son of William Edson and Eliza Ann Cook Royce, was born May 18, 1863, at Orwell, Vermont, and died at his home in Kirwin May 31, 1938, at the age of 75 years, 13 days. Father born 1824--Mother born 1829

When 21 years of age, he came from his Vermont home to Kirwin to accept the position of Assistant Cashier at the Traders Bank which position he held until the bank changed hands. Later he became Cashier of the Citizens State Bank and likewise held that position until it was transferred to other owners. He was engaged in the real estate and insurance business for a number of years.

In 1887 he was united in marriage to Lena Abbey, and to this union one son, Robert Paul, formerly of Kirwin but now of Los Angeles, California, was born. Lena and Howard later divorced between 1925 and 1930.

In 1932 he married Hattie E. Colby Moulton. She was divorced from Walter S. Moulton who was born abt 1875 in Wisconsin. Walter moved to Idaho after the divorce.

In his passing he leaves to mourn his death his beloved wife, his son and five grandchildren: Thayne Royce of Omaha, Nebraska, Ronald Royce of Los Angeles, California, Mrs. Raymond Hagman of Kirwin, and Mrs. Harvey Dixon of Agra, Kansas, and Harold George with his parents in Los Angeles. Five step-children are also left to mourn his death.

Mr. Royce was one who appreciated and derived much enjoyment from the finer things in literature and the beautiful in nature. He was, in the thriving days of Kirwin, one of its most prominent businessmen, and his death marks the passing of another of the older landmarks of the community.

He was a kind and loving husband and father and his going will be an occasion of great sorrow to those who loved him so well.

The 1925 Kansas census shows Howard and Lena are married. by the 1930 federal census Howard is shown as divorced.
