Edward M. Bowman, Sr., 81, of Cheshire, passed away on Saturday (April 17, 2010) at his home. He was husband of the late Mary (Wolff) Bowman and the late Barbara (Formica) Bowman of Cheshire.


Mr. Bowman was born in Waterbury on December 3, 1928, the only son of the late Matthew J. and Mary (Duff) Bowman.


He was a lifelong resident of Cheshire, having graduated from Humiston School and Leavenworth High School Class of 1947 in Waterbury. Mr. Bowman was an active communicant of St. Bridget Church, Cheshire, and a 2003 recipient of the St. Joseph Medal of Appreciation by Archbishop Daniel Cronin.


Mr. Bowman was a devoted member of the Cheshire Rotary Club since 1961 and became a Paul Harris Fellow in 1981. He was a 4th degree Knight in the Sante Fe Council #2978 Cheshire. He was one of the founding members and past President of Cheshire Junior Football, a founding member of the Cheshire Skating Rink and a Cheshire Youth Baseball coach. Mr. Bowman was inducted in the Cheshire High School Hall of Fame in 2003.


He enjoyed hunting and fishing, golf, and football, and was an avid fan for all sporting events especially ones that his children or grandchildren participated in. A plumbing and heating contractor for over fifty years, Mr. Bowman founded White-Bowman Plumbing and Heating of Cheshire and various other businesses.


Mr. Bowman is survived by his seven sons, Matthew (Judy), George( Rita), Paul (Kristin), Edward, Jr. "Ned" (Jane), Christopher (Nancy), James (Michelle), Patrick (Terry), his daughter, Sally Bowman all of Cheshire. He also leaves his twenty-five grandchildren Bridget, Steven (Alicia), Ashley, Nicholas Bowman, Michael (Katelyn), Joseph (Beth), Kate, Rosemary, John, Shaun Bowman, Phillip, Sarah, Carolyn and Melissa Bowman, Edward "Ted' III, Elizabeth Bowman, Peter (Melissa), Lauren, Jamie Bowman, Jeffrey, Kiki Bowman, Robert, Erin and Maryanne Bowman, and Kevin Bowman; six great-grandchildren Michael Patrick, Molly, James, and Emily Bowman, Claire and Grace Bowman and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves five step-sons, Paul Formica of East Lyme, Major General Richard (Diane) Formica, Burke VA, John (Wendy) Formica, Madison, NJ and Robert (Melinda) Formica and Michael (Becky) Formica, both of Cheshire; fifteen step-grandchildren; his sister Margaret "Peggy" Cook of Cheshire; his sister-in-law, Lorraine (Wolff) Falvey of Rocky Hill; and brother-in-law, Armand (Sandy) Wolff of Cromwell. He was predeceased by his sisters Mary Rochford and Martha Bailey.


A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday (April 21, 2010) at 10:00 a.m. in St. Bridget Church, 175 Main Street, Cheshire. Friends are asked to meet directly at the Church.
Burial will follow in St. Bridget Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 3:00-8:00 p.m. at Alderson Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 South Main Street.
