John W. Davis lived in Morgan County, AL between Somerville and Eva. He was married to Lucinda "Lucy" Derrick and they had one child, Mary Davis (w/o John H. Childers m. July 26, 1880).

Shortly after the War Between the States started, he joined the 27th AL Infantry Regiment in December 1861 with his brothers-in-law, Andrew Derrick and John Young Derrick.

All three soldiers were captured at the fall of Fort Donelson in February 1862, following a lengthy siege by General US Grant's forces. And all three died in Union prisons. Lucy filed a widow's claim on June 6, 1863.

The winter of 1862 was particularly brutal -- and it's likely the exposure John suffered at Fort Donelson caused his death.
