Bill was born Jan. 21, 1935, in McKinney and moved to Amarillo with his parents, W. L."Bill" and Alma Brown on Dec. 7, 1941. He married Joann Norman on Aug. 30, 1957, in Amarillo. They made their home in Amarillo, where they enjoyed 53 happy years together.
Bill graduated from Amarillo High School in 1954. He attended Amarillo College and served as a member of the Texas National Guard 142nd Infantry. He worked in the automotive parts business for Baker Automotive and Smyth Auto Supply. In 1972, Bill entered the car business. He held various management positions at Sid Stout Ford and Ron Clark Ford. Bill was a salesman for Plains Chevrolet from 1994 until he retired in 2002. He was a member of First Baptist Church for many years.
Bill was a very kind, hardworking man, who loved his family very much. He especially enjoyed watching his two grandsons in their sporting events. He also enjoyed woodworking, riding motorcycles, restoring old cars and watching both NASCAR and football.
His positive attitude and brave spirit were a source of strength and comfort for all those who witnessed his long, courageous battle with cancer, and the family is very thankful for the many prayers on behalf of Bill. He was able to have many more years than expected, and we are grateful to all the doctors and nurses that were instrumental in his care, especially Dr. Milan Patel and Dr. Sloan Teeple. The family is also extremely grateful for the exceptional care he received in his final days at BSA Hospice.
Bill is survived by his wife; a daughter, Carol Handleson and husband Brian, of Fort Worth; a son Gary Brown and wife Melissa; two grandsons, Travis Brown and Connor Brown, both of Amarillo; three sisters-in-law, Barbara Davis, of Pittsburg, Mo., Wilma Johnson and husband Jerry of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Shirley Hollis and husband Larry of Manhattan, Kan.; and eight nieces and nephews.
The family suggest memorials be to Gideons International, PO Box 2304, Amarillo, TX 79105 or Baptist Saint Anthony's Hospice, PO Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79105-9975.
