Edward E. Atkinson, 86, of Downing, MO passed away on March 6, 2009 at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO, where he had been a resident since September 2008.

The son of Frank Elsworth and Ella (Props) Atkinson, he was born on August 1, 1922, in rural Queen City, MO.

Ed was united in marriage to Lorene Brown and to this union one son, Ronald E. was born. He was later united in marriage to Maxine (Redding) Ross.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine Atkinson of Downing, MO; his son, Ronald Atkinson and wife, Arloa of Queen City, MO; one step-daughter, Jeanette Martin of Greentop, MO; two step-sons, Garry Ross of Downing, MO and Larry Ross and wife, Phyllis of Fairfield, IA; one step-daughter, Barbara Anderson and husband, Larry of Troy, MO; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; other family members and a host of many good friends.

Preceding Ed in death include his parents; a twin sister, Edna McElroy and one brother, George Atkinson.

Ed was a World War II veteran where he served in the Army Air Force.

Ed, sometimes known as "Pappy" by family members, was a catapiller operator for many years working for people in the Downing, MO and surrounding area. He and Maxine also operated the Downing restaurant for a number of years where they made many good friends. After many years in the restaurant business, they retired just to enjoy life!

Funeral services were held on March 9, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Norman Funeral Home in Downing, MO, with Sonny Smyser, pastor of the Schuyler County Church of Faith of Lancaster, MO officiating. Pallbearers were Brandon Atkinson, Brian Atkinson, Jim Ross, Bruce Anderson, Kevin Schimpf and Rob Cavineff.

Memorials have been established for the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO, Downing Fire Department or the Downing Cemetery. Burial was in the Downing Cemetery in Downing, MO. Arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Downing and Lancaster, MO.
