OBITUARY: Sunday, June 17, 2001, The Washington Post. Howard F. Thomas Government Economist. Howard F. Thomas, 75, a retired economist for the U.S. Agency for International development and a Washington Artist, died of cancer June 13 at the hospice care unit ot Thomas House nursing home in Washington.
Mr. Thomas who moved to Washington in the early 1940's, was born in Troy, N.Y. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and George Washington University. He also attended D.C. Teachers College and the Corcoran School of Art.
He served in the Army with an intelligence unit in Europe during and after World War II.
Mr. Thomas worked 36 years for AID, mainly in Asian affairs. In the 1950's and 1960's, his oil paintings and other mixed-media works were displayed in Washington galleries. His works were also popular at the Georgetown Flea Market.
In retirement, he was a genealogical consultant and avid investor in the stock market. He was a member of the American Legion and St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Capitol Hill. Survivors include his wife, Yvonne M. Thomas of Washington, a half brother, and two half sisters.
