Ex-Councilman Ray Davis Dies

Former city councilman and long time civic leader in Seminole, Ray Davis , died Tuesday at Pioneer Nursing Home, where he had been a resident since his health began to fail quite some time ago. Davis died of a heart attack while doing his favorite thing-singing hymns during church services being held at the nursing home for the residents. He was dead on arrival of ambulance personnel from Seminole Municipal Hospital. He was 86.

Davis served as Ward One Councilman for a number of terms and was recognized in 1976 for his efforts in developing Seminole's industrial resources. The main street through Seminole's Industrial Park, which was not then developed, was named Ray Davis Boulevard and a street sign proclaming it as such was prsented to him as a surprise during a celebration of the 50th wedding anniversary of Davis and his wife, Mary.

Mrs. Davis died October 6,1983.

He was also preceded in death by a son, who died in a car bicycle accident as a child and a daughter, Betty who died in 1978 in Fairfax County, VA.

Davis and his wife were both long time members of First Baptist Church and were active as long as their health permitted in all phases of the church's activities. He taught a Sunday School class and also worked with the church's older population.

The two of them owned and operated Davis Printing shop here until their retirement.

He was also known as a poet and, in his own way, an historian, penning at least two small books containg historical sketches of places and people which he considered important in Oklahoma. He continued to entertain people with his poetry even after moving to the nursing home, where he visited with other residents daily, making his rounds in a wheel chair.
