James was a stonemason and farmer living in PA with his parents in 1850, he moved with them to Lee County, IA in 1851. He is known to have owned 263 Acres of land in the town platt of Franklin, IA between July 29 1854 and April 18, 1855. In late 1860 or early 1861, he married Anna Distal. They had nine children, Samuel J, Mary Jane, Christine, John Henry, Charles A. (Gus), Frank, Albert, James Edward, and William. His brothers and sisters are buried in the same cemetery.
