OBITUARY
Captain W.H. Brannan died at his home, on north High street, this morning at an early hour, after an illness of less than a week with pneumonia. He was taken sick last Thursday night, and seemed to grow rapidly worse from the start, and his sudden death was a severe shock, not only to his family but to the whole community. No man stood higher in the estimation of the people, and no man retained their love and confidence to a higher extent. A native of Franklin County, his whole life has been one long record of usefulness, of honesty and upright bearing. In his death the county and town lose one of our prominent citizens, the County Bar one of its ablest and best loved members, and every citizen who knew him, and whom he knew, a most valued friend.

William H. Brannan was born in the 9th district of Franklin county, near Alto, Oct. 2, 1833, and until eighteen years of age he was known as a faithful farmer boy. After the death of his mother in 1851, he received permission from his father to seek his own way in the world, and began at once to earn the money for his schooling, which he did, and took a complete course in Irving College, near McMinnville, finishing in 1857; he then taught school until Turney's Volunteer Regiment marched away with Capt. W.H. Brannan in its ranks. Serving through the war, he was captured April 6, 1865, or three days before Lee's surrender, near Appomattox Court House, and taken to Johnson's Island, kept a prisoner until June, when he was paroled and returned home. He read law in the same office with Govenor [sic] Turney in 1867, receiving his license to practice in 1868, since which time he has been in active practice.
