Merle was the wife of Arther Ray Steely, married December 29,1937 in Huntsville. Merle was struck and killed by an automobile in front of their home on Highway 190 on the east side of Huntsville. She worked as a research worker for the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Census Bureau while they lived in Houston. She was a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints and taught a women's class until her death. An active member of the Walker Co. Genealogical Society, she traced her family to Elija P. Alcorn and Nancy Hodge of the "Old Three Hundred" original colonists who came to Texas with Stephen F. Austin's colony.
