VALLEY CENTER, Calif.

Sgt. Major Edward ( Feody ) Catallo U.S.M.C. retired, 86, formerly of Water-ford, died Sunday, May 11, 2008 at his daughter's residence after a brief illness. Born in Waterford, he was son of the late Orazio and Loretta Villa Catallo and was a 1941 graduate of Waterford High School. Sgt. Major Catallo served with the U.S.M.C 1st division from 1942 to 1968. He served with the troops that landed on Guadalcanal on August 7, 1942. On August 21, 1942, he fought in and all-night firefight along the Taneru River. After a rest period in Australia, he was sent into the invasion of Cape Gloucester on New Britain Island on Christmas Day, 1943. He also served in Korea and Vietnam and retired after 26 years of service. He had resided in Carlsbad, Calif. and worked in the U.S. Post Office there. He later moved to Valley Center, where he owned and operated an avocado ranch called Rancho De Loma. Survivors include his wife Rhoda Catallo ; three daughters, Loretta Ulrich, Elizabeth Martinez and Evelyn Meneray, all of Calif.; two brothers, David (Gloria) Catallo , Walter (Faith) Catallo ; two sisters, Lena Decker and Anne (Dominick) Gabriel; and his sister-in-law, Ruby Catallo , all of Waterford; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Ed was predeceased by his wife, Mary Crystal Catallo ; grandson, Joseph Martinez; granddaughter, Rachel Meneray; his three brothers, Anthony, Merico, and Guerino Catallo ; and his sister, Elizabeth LaFond. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass on Thursday at 7 p.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Water-ford. Arrangements are under the direction of the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St., Waterford.
