On December 26, 1897, David married Mamie Ethel "Effie" Newkirk in Latham, Moniteau County, Missouri. By 1899, they had moved to Indian Territory region of Oklahoma, where all of their children were born. They were Bennie (died young), Gladys (died young) and Ethel Lee. Effie died giving birth to Ethel. David returned to Missouri where Ethel was raised by David's mother, Rose Ann (Newkirk) Hays.
David's second wife was Isola Elizabeth "Bird" (Lewis) Hays. Their children were Frances Olmay, Daisy Magdalena "Lena", Donald "Chauncey", David "Hampton" and Dp. David died before the birth of his son, Dp (the name is dirived from his father's initials; since she already had a son named David).
