Dr. Velma (Gehman) Boston was born on Tuesday; June 27, 1916 , in Kingscreek; Champaign County, Ohio. She was the daughter of: Dr. Ralph and Elizabeth Gehman. Velma moved with her parents and brother, Paul to Des Moines; Polk County, Iowa in 1924 where they made their home. Velma attended school in Des Moines graduating from Roosevelt High School. She then attended the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery, graduating with high honors. On March 3, 1939 Dr. Velma married a fellow classmate, Dr. George W. Marston at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Two children blessed this marriage, a daughter, Debora Sue and a son, Lloyd Randall. Velma and George practiced medicine in Lewis, Des Moines, Clear Lake and Schaller, Iowa. Together in 1950, they built the Schaller Hospital which was later converted into the nursing home and currently houses a local physician. She enjoyed her general practice for many years caring for countless individuals and families in the entire area surrounding Schaller and beyond. Dr. Velma was very pleased to have been instrumental in establishing and training the original group of Schaller E.M.T.'s. She was also very active in the development of the Schaller Chamber of Commerce and the Popcorn Days Celebration. After her separation from Dr. Marston, Velma was married to Dr. George Boston. She continued to practice medicine in Schaller until her retirement in 1986. Dr. Velma was a life member of the National Osteopathic Association as well as the state and district associations. She had been a member of Delta Omega Sorority, Order of Eastern Star and White Shrine. She was also active in several local clubs and organizations, some of which included Tuesday Club, Clover Club and various bridge clubs. Dr. Velma was baptized and a life long member of the United Methodist Church. She was currently an active and devoted member of the Schaller United Methodist Church. Velma (Gehman) Boston, age 93, passed away on Monday; March 29, 2010 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa. Those left to mourn her passing are: Her daughter and son-in-law, Debora and Pieter Kuyper of Arlington, Washington; four grandchildren, Jodi Matkosky and her husband, Gary of Freeman, Missouri, Toni Marston of Ida Grove, Iowa, Jennifer White and her husband, Curtis of Arlington, Washington, Michael Kuyper and his wife, Marie of Pocatello, Idaho; seventeen great grandchildren; as well as many very dear friends. Velma was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Lloyd Randall; her husband, George Boston; her brother, Paul Gehman; and Debora's father, George Marston. May they rest in peace. Visitation will be from: 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday; April 2, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Schaller; Sac County, Iowa. Funeral services will begin at: 11:00 a.m. on Saturday; April 2, 2010 also at the United Methodist Church in Schaller, Iowa. Interment will be at the: Schaller Cemetery in Schaller, Iowa. The Martin Mattice Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
