Joseph was one of the last 19 Marines alive in the Marine 5th Division.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATION to
ASSAULT TROOPS OF THE FIFTH AMPHIBIOUS CORPS, (REINFORCED) UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

The picture taken on Iwo Jima by Rosenthal named "Gung Ho" appeared in the Chicago Tribune in February 1945 a few days after the taking of Iwo Jima.

There is an arrow pointed at Uncle Joe on the right middle section.

His uniform and medals have disappeared but the love he gave his family and country will never be forgotten.
