Milton A. Kaplan, 88, formerly of Blooming Prairie, died Saturday, April 24, 2010 at Homestead Hospice House. He and his wife were residents of Traditions I in Owatonna prior to his death.

Milton was born in Summit Township, Minnesota the son of Frank and Esther (Busho) Kaplan. He attended District 86 school in rural Ellendale and graduated on June 25, 1936. Following school he helped on the family farm and for area neighbors. Milton entered the United States Navy in November 1942 and served during WWII in the South Pacific on the USS Wharton. He later received his honorable discharge as Seaman First Class in January 1946.

Upon his discharge, Milton returned to his family's farm in Summit Township until he was united in marriage to Irene Amelia Maixner on October 4, 1949 at Associated Church in Owatonna. The couple farmed northeast of Owatonna prior to moving their farm northwest of Blooming Prairie in 1956. He retired from farming in 1994 and the couple later moved to Blooming Prairie in 2000.

Milton always enjoyed the outdoors, woodworking projects and visiting with family and friends. He was an avid vegetable and flower gardener that included gladiolas and lilies. He was a past treasurer of Blooming Prairie Township and served on the Oak Glen Creamery Board in Bixby. He was a member of the Blooming Prairie Lions Club and also a member of the Servicemen's Club. In 1986, Milton was awarded the Conservation Farmer of the Year for Steele County.

He is survived by his wife Irene of Owatonna; a daughter, Nancy (and Karl) Luiken of Savage; two brothers, Lloyd (and Jackie) Kaplan of Ellendale; Harold (and Ethel) Kaplan of Aitkin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank in February 1959, Esther in March 1955 and a sister, Irene Kaplan in December 2001.

Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and one hour prior to the service in the church. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at 11:00 AM at United Methodist Church, Owatonna with Pastor Loren Olson officiating. Interment will be in the Bohemian National Cemetery in Owatonna.
