JAMES WILLIAM "BILL" PICKERING

James William 'Bill" Pickering was born on August 13, 1944, son of Nina Nadine Vest and the grandson of Otice and Georgia Vest at Eureka, Kansas. Siblings included two step brothers, Donald and Kenneth Myers, one step sister, Marilyn Griffith. and two half sisters, Shelia Shue and Debbie Hall.

Bill grew up in Eureka, Kansas, and attended Eureka schools graduating from Eureka High School in 1962. In high school he played football, basketball, and competed in track events. He was a swimmer and diver for the Eureka Swim Team. Following high school graduation, he spent the next four years in the United States Marine Corps. In addition to his regular duties in the Marines, he played on a football team. Upon discharge from the Marines, he received a football scholarship to play for Cowley County Community College. He also attended Butler County Community College, Friends University, and Emporia State University.

Bill married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Ann Parks, on September 2, 1967. After 17 years of marriage they were blessed with a daughter, Ashlee.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Emporia State University in 1972, Bill taught business and physical education classes and coached football, track and golf at Marion High School, Marion, Kansas. thru 1987. During the next three years, he operated some oil leases near Fredonia, Kansas. In 1990, the family moved to Arlington, Texas. where he was a partner in Woodgate Homes. The family returned to Marion in 1993, and Bill worked with Sanders Electric. Following that he owned and operated some oil leases near Predonia, Kansas. After selling the leases in 2004, he worked for USD #408 in Marion for the maintenance/transportation department until the time of his death.

He was baptized and a member of the Marion Presbyterian Church.

Bill enjoyed fishing and hunting with many friends over the years. He loved to tell stories and jokes and never knew a stranger. He enjoyed traveling with his family and friends and had been in most states, in Canada to fish, and in Germany, Austria, and France. He was a devoted husband, father, son-in-law, brother, uncle, and friend to many.

He was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents. father-in.-law, and step brother.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret, daughter Ashlee of Wichita. Kansas, mother-in-law Margaret Parks of Eureka, Kansas, step brother Donald Myers of Plattsburg. New York, step sister Marilyn Griffith of Carbondale, Kansas, half sisters Shelia Shue of Eureka, Kansas. and Debbie Hall of Humboldt, Kansas, nieces, nephews, a loving extended family and many close friends.

Bill was diagnosed with leukemia on March 2, 2009, and has been in Wichita at Via Cbristi-St. Francis Hospital going through treatments. He suffered a stroke following his first round of chemotherapy and went through rehabilitation to recover from it. At the time of his death, he was recovering at home when a blood clot passed through his lungs. He passed away on July 22, 2009, with his loving family at his side.

Bill loved his family, loved his friends, loved the Lord, and loved his life. He will be greatly missed and remembered always.
