Lena was only 6 years old when her father unexpectedly died. The family moved from Sedalia, Missouri back closer to relatives around Willow Fork in Moniteau County, Missouri. Although her mother tried to keep the family of 6 children intact, eventually some of the children went to live with relatives. Lena was taken in by her father's brother, Charlie Hays, and his wife, Minnie. They lived in the rural community of Moreau in Morgan County, Missouri. Charlie and Minnie had also taken Nettie Mae Jones to raise from the time her mother died, the day after Nettie's 1st birthday. Lena and Nettie were raised together for about 10 years. After high school, Lena went to the Kansas City area where her mother had relocated some years before. It was in Kansas City that Lena met and married Hugh Bryan. Their children were Mary Frances and Don Ronald. Lena and Hugh divorced and Lena never remarried. Her daughter, Mary Frances, was paralyzed in an automobile accident as a young woman; afterward she came to live with Lena at her home at 6112 W. 58th Street, Mission, Kansas. They both loved to sew, cross-stitch, and crochet and created many beautiful items that they generously shared with family and friends.
Lena is buried with her daughter, Mary Frances, and granddaughter, Dawn.
