Claude came to the Bellview area of northern Curry County around 1908 and later homesteaded there. He was a farmer. He first lived in a dugout and traveled on foot for 7 miles to get water. He was joined by his mother Penelope, sister Della, and brother Barney in 1915 and they all lived together in a home built of lumber from a school that had been abandoned. He walked everywhere he went.
