George Layfield and Sarah Elizabeth McNemar, daughter of Philip and Mary Ann McNemar of Hardy County, West Virginia, were married 9 October, 1864, Harrison County, WV. George and Sarah became the parents of nine children: Mary Elizabeth born 1866; Thomas born 1867; Grant born 1868; Elizabeth A. born 1870; Martha Jane born 1871; Noah born 1873; John R. born 1874; William Henry born 1875; George Abby born 1879.

George Layfield volunteered for the Union Army during the Civil War, as did his father John Jackson Layfield Sr., and two brothers, John Jackson Layfield Jr., and James Layfield. James Layfield died in Burkville, Virgina two weeks after the final battle of the war a few miles from Burkville, at Saylor's Creek, Virginia.

George returned home to his family and the farm. George and Sarah were happy raising their young growing family, working their farm, caring for his elderly parents who lived with them. George's father John Jackson Layfield Sr. passed away in 1877. George Layfield died 30 July, 1878,age 36.

Sarah was 32 when George died. She was expecting their baby, born 28 Feb 1879, naming him George Abby Layfield. Their daughter Martha died at age twelve in 1884.

Elizabeth Moats Layfield remained living with Sarah after George her son died. They shared their lives as family until Elizabeth died in 1892, age 89. Elizabeth was buried by her husband John Jackson Layfield Sr. Sarah's six young boys worked the farm and her daughters helped in the home. Sarah kept her family intact, rearing them to adulthood. She did not remarry. Sarah died in 1906, age 60, and was laid to rest by her husband George.

Sarah's nephew James Sanford McNemar and first wife Louisa J. Russell are buried in Layfields Cemetery. Brother Samuel McNemar and wife Basheba "Bashee" (Vincent) Layfield are buried in Fairview Church Cemetery, Ritchie County, West Virginia.
