The Woods owned a farm outside of Clarksburg when Carleton was a child. His horse, Dixie, and his father's horse, Mike, were kept there.
He served in the US Navy during WW II, aboard the USS BILOXI; helped evacuate 219 recovered Allied military personnel from Nagasaki. The liberated men were principally Dutch and Javanese.
He was in the Navy from February 15, 1945 to July 3, 1946 as a Seaman 1st Class and stationed in Great Lakes, Illinois, on the USS BILOXI, USS Landing Craft Infantry (LCI) for 2 weeks and the USS VULCAN. He earned the Pacific Theater Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon and the Victory Medal.
Carleton graduated from Washington Irving High School in 1947 (See Graduation Program in Source #3) and attended WV University, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.
He was an architect and worked in the firms of E.J. Wood and Son; W.H. Grant, Jr. Firm; Whalen King; and was president of WYK Associates in Clarksburg, WV until his retirement, June 1, 1995.
Carleton died of lung cancer at his home on Sunday, April 19, 1998 at 10:30 p.m. A memorial service was held at Christ Episcopal Church on Saturday, April 25, 1998 and his ashes are in Christ Church Columbarium, in the fifth space from the left on the top tier. Source: living daughter.
