AGAPITO PAZOS MÉNDEZ, THE MAN WHO LIVED 77 YEARS IN A HOSPITAL ROOM IN SPAIN
Agapito Pazos was born in Lalín, a municipality in the province of Pontevedra, in the north of Spain. In 1933, when he was three years old, and suffering from muscle dystrophia and psychical incapacity, he was left just at the entrance door of what at that time was a benficiency center (now converted to an hospital).
From then on, he lived all of his life in that center, so it means that he was living in a hospital for 77 years of his 80 years of life. He had no family nor relatives, and since 1993 a Galician local Social Center (Fundación Sálvora) was responsible for his care.
He was living all his life in the same room, 415. He was loved by her caretakers, doctors and nurses. Since he was living there for that much time, he had some king of "privileges" like his bed oriented to the window or a spoon, knife and fork with his initials (Agapito was the only person in the hospital that had this privilege). He was not put on a elder's residence because the judge said that moving him to a different place than the hospital would damage his health.
He hated soup but loved cheese. He spent time on his room watching TV. He never left his room, just once, some years ago when he was taken by one of the late ordelies of the hospital (Eloy) to watch the sea.
He was a smiling person until the lasts months when he suffered from stomach cancer and brain ictus and was not able to talk.
Agapito was buried in a tomb of the local cementery of San Mauro that belonged to himself. Even he had no family or properties, he received some money from the Government due to his incapacity.
Agapito Pazos is remembered with by all those who knew him with though he said he sometimes got angry because he had a strong personality. Actually, his colleagues (doctors, nurses, orderlies, patients) knew him as just "the patient". They even didn't knew his second surname (or last name) and they just discovered it when he died and read it on his death certificate.
More than forty of his colleagues in the hospital (doctors, nurses, orderlies, patients) paid for an obituary for him on the local press, and all of them remember Agapito's high and overcoming spirit and his strong will for self-improvement.
