Sherman was listed in his obituary as a prominent farmer in the Norris community who had lived in Pickens County all his life. He was the son of the late William Peter & Jane McCollum Gilstrap and the husband of Mary
A. Hunter Gilstrap.

Surviving him were his wife; three sons, E.W. Gilstrap, J.A. Gilstrap and E.O. Gilstrap; two daughters, Mrs. F.L. (Bessie) Kay and Mrs. Bill (Irene) Stansell, all of whom lived in Norris; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Hunter of Baxley, Ga., and Mrs. Mattie Hunter of Liberty; and 14 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Norris Baptist Church on Saturday, September 30, 1939.

Burial: West View Cemetery.
