He had lived in Pickens County all his life, and his obituary indicated he had many friends in the community.
At the time of his death he was survived by his wife and these children: Will Gilstrap, Mrs. L.C. Hunter, Mrs. C.C. Durham, Clyde Gilstrap, Claude Gilstrap, and Ralph Gilstrap; 41 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a brother, Sherman Gilstrap; and four sisters, Mrs. Emma Hunter, Mrs. Mattie Hunter, Mrs. Sallie McCombs, and Mrs. S.A. Smith.
His funeral was held at the Second Baptist Church (later renamed Eastside Baptist) on Wednesday, October 14, 1931, conducted by the Rev. E.O. Edwards.
Burial: West View Cemetery.
