Wayne C. Benson, 57, of Somerset Avenue, Riverside, a volunteer for veterans, died Thursday at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of Judith M. (Duggan) Benson. Born in Providence, a son of the late Delbert H. and Alicia (Clark) Benson, he had lived in East Providence for 33 years. Mr. Benson was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, a recipient of the Purple Heart and the Army Commendation Medal with a V, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He had volunteered at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Providence, for 11 years. Mr. Benson was a member of First Baptist Church. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, David W. Benson of East Providence and James A. Benson of Riverside; a daughter, Karen L. Gifford of Lumberport, W.Va.; two brothers, Jeffrey D. Benson of Rochester, Ill., and Paul H. Benson of Mount Upton, N.Y.; and a grandson. The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home, 350 Willett Ave., Riverside. Burial with military honors will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
