John A. Frye, 77, formerly of Hoyt Avenue, a self-employed jewelry designer and manufacturer, died yesterday in the Rhode Island Veterans Home, Bristol. He was the husband of Mary (Dailey) Frye. Born in Medford, Mass., a son of the late A. Tobias and Margaret (Murphy) Frye, he had lived in Rumford for 38 years. As a jewelry designer, he created many pieces for the Halston and Estee Lauder Companies. An accomplished athlete, he attended La Salle Academy, Providence, where he was on the golf team and, at the age of 15, shot a hole-in-one. He was also on the track team, where he established a state record in the broad jump that lasted for many years. He was also a sailor, partaking in many Newport-to-Bermuda races. Mr. Frye was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He was a 1931 graduate of Brown University. He was a member of the Rhode Island Jewelers Association, the Brown Alumni Association, the Wannamoisett Country Club, the Rhode Island Golf Association and the American Legion. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Maya Colantuono of Seekonk; and four grandchildren. The funeral will be held Monday at 8:30 a.m. from Monahan-Kelly Drabble-Sherman Funeral Home, 230 Waterman St., Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Margaret Church, Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence. Burial with military honors will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
