John Granville Thomas was the son of Henry Archer Thomas and Norella Jessie Harrison. He married Goldye Barker on Christmas Eve 1924. Goldye was the sister of Mattie Barker, who had married John’s older brother, Henry Aubra Thomas, in 1905. John and Goldye’s children and Henry and Mattie’s children always referred to themselves as “double first cousins” as a result.

Both John and his brother were ironworkers. John moved to New York City and then to the Washington, DC area following his trade. Following Henry’s death in a construction accident, John and Goldye took in Mattie and some of her children at their home in Arlington, VA while she got a job and worked to re-establish financial stability for her family.

Following his career at an ironworker, John went to work as a night watchman at Arlington National Cemetery near his home. He was on his rounds at the cemetery, on his third day of work, when he suffered a fatal heart attack in the amphitheater at the cemetery.
