OBITUARY: The Durango Herald Democrat 04 Dec 1931, page 1.
"S. G. WALL, prominent pioneer druggist of Durango, passed away at his home on the north of Third avenue, at 7:30 Thursday evening. Samuel G. WALL was one of the leading and pioneer citizens of the San Juan basin, coming to Durango in 1881. Mr. Wall was born in Morgantown, KY Oct 6, 1862 the son of America Metcalf and Samuel G. WALL. Deceased was born a short time before his father was killed in the Civil War.

He left KY while yet a young man, and located in Central City, CO, in 1880, where he resided for a year, then moving to Durango. On coming here Mr. WALL was employed in a drug store operated by Charles H. NEWMAN, and was also mayor of Durango one term and county treasurer of LaPlata county. Shortly after going to work for Mr. MEWMAN in the drug store, Mr. WALL acquired an interest in the business and later purchased the interest of his partner. He built the building now occupied by the S. G. WALL drug store at the corner of Main and 9th, and the business has been located there for many years.

His parents were married briefly and it appears he was the only child of this union before his father died in the Civil War. His mother remarried. Samuel was raised by maternal relatives, in particular Uncle Thomas Newton Metcalf. He named his first child after this uncle. He named another son after his paternal uncle John Hamilton Wall.
