Joseph S. Vitale Sr., 71, of Ferry Street, West Nanticoke, died Thursday evening, Jan 5, 1989, in the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital where he was a patient for the past three weeks.
He was born Jan 13, 1917 in Wilkes-Barre and was the son of the late Salvatore and Carmela (Ninfo) Vitale.
He and his son, Joseph Jr., operated the Park Auto Wreckers and J & J Excavating Co., Hanover Township and West Nanticoke, for the past 50 years.
He was an accomplished musician and had his own band, The Three Gems, and he also frequently entertained at local hospitals, veteran hospitals, senior citizens clubs and with other local bands.
He was educated in the Wilkes-Barre schools and was employed most recently by Allen Subs in Wilkes-Barre and Kingston.
He was a member of St. Francis Church, Nanticoke, and American Federation of Musicians, Local 140, Wilkes-Barre.
His wife, the former Esther Wilde, died Oct 10, 1984.
Surviving are children, Mrs. Florian (Carmela) Michno and Miss Theresa Struble, both of Nanticoke; Joseph Vitale Jr., West Nanticoke; Mrs. Patrick (Esther) Donlon, Kingston; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brothers, Anthony Vitale, Camden, NJ; Salvatore Vitale, Riverside, NJ; John Vitale, Newton, NJ; Michael Vitale, Daniel Vitale and Sebastian Vitale, all of Wilkes-Barre; sisters, Mrs. Amelia Morgan, Mountaintop; Mrs. Catherine Zett, Wilkes-Barre.
Funeral services will be Monday at 8:30 a.m. from the Stanley S. Stegura Funeral Home, 614 Hanover St., Nanticoke, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 in St. Francis Church, Nanticoke.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.
Friends may call Sunday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
