James was the son of George W. Sprinkle & Eliza C. Osborne.

He married Eliza Louisa Stanley in 1879 in Lee Co., VA.

They had two children: Cora Kate (Bruner, Daugherty) and Mary Belle (Brown).

His obituary in the Greenville Herald includes: " He is survived by his widow and two daughters, Mrs. John Brown of Greenville and Mrs. Bradley Daugherty, of Concord; 17 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren; 2 sisters: Mrs. Billy Stanley and Mrs. Mary Jane Brunner, of Pennington Gap, Virginia."

His obituary also states: "He was a successful farmer in the Salem community for 35 years and was one of the leading citizens of that section. He was prominent in community affairs and was also well known throughout Hunt County. "
