_____& Courier, Charleston, S.C., Monday, June 7, 1982, "Rear Adm. N.K. Dietrich Dies in Washington - Washington, D.C. -Retired Rear Adm. NEAL KITTRELL DIETRICH, who once commaned the Navy's U.S. Atlantic Fleet Mine Force in Charleston, died Thursday at his residence.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Fort Myer Chapel, Arlington, Va. Burial, directed by Gawler's Funeral Home, Washington, will be in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

Adm. DIETRICH was born in Hopkinsville, Ky., a son of CHARLES DIETRICH. He was a 1923 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, and in 1935 became an instructor at the academy.

He commanded the Fleet Mine Force in 1956 and 1957. After retirement, he joined the Charleston Development board, a position he held until he was elected vice president of Hazeltine Corp., an electronics firm with offices in New York and Washington D.C.

He also served on the battleship Colorado, destroyers Wod and Grer, aircraft carrier Langley and cruiser Marblehead.

He was aide and flag lieutenant to Commander Battleships, Battle Force. He was commander of the destroyer Lamson and later served in the Navy's Bureau for Navigation in Washington. In August 1942, he was named executive officer of the battleship Alabama. In 1943, he joined the staff of the commander of Naval Forces in Europe as logistics officer and later became deputy chief of staff.

While serving in Europe, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, the French Croix de Gueere and the order of the British Empire.

In March 1945 he served duty as aid and flag secretary to Fleet Adm. Ernest J. King, then chief of naval operations. During this assisgnment received the Navy Commendation Ribbon for meritorious service.

He commanded the cruiser Houston and later served as chief of staff to the commander of the Atlantic Fleet Battleship-Cruiser Force. He was chief of staff to the commander of the Navy's Sixth Fleet. In 1950, he became commanding officer opf Destroyer Flotilla Two and in January 1952, he was appointed naval attache for air at the American Embassy in London.

Surviving are his wife, JANET J. DIETRICH; two children, Mrs. LEMUEL C. SHEPERD III of La Jolla, Calif. and Dr. SHELDY DIETRICH of Lexington, Ky.; and six grandchildren.
