Noted Gettysburg Battlefield Photographer, became premier photographer for Pennsylvania (now Gettysburg)College and for battlefield reunions. "Bill" Tipton was an apprentice to the TYSON BROTHERS PHOTOGRAPHERS when he was 12 and was the managing partner of TIPTON and MYERS PHOTOGRAPHERS when he was 16. Over 1,000 Tipton negatives, depicting the battlefield between 1863 and 1929 were acquired by the National Park Service in 1940. This comprehensive collection was transferred to the National Archives in 1965. This has ensured the preeminence of Tipton's role as one of Gettysburg's most important early photographers.
