CARROLL EDWARD COLLINS

COLLINS, CARROLL EDWARD, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on January 20, 2010 at age 84.

He was born in Metropolis, Illinois but lived most of his life in the Chicago area. Carroll enlisted in the U.S. Navy just out of High School in 1943. He completed the Electronics Training Program, cramming the major topics of a standard electrical engineering curriculum into less than a year. During WWII Radar was highly secret and could not be talked about. Carroll's last class was at Treasure Island, San Francisco where he received his certificate of completion from the Naval training school of Radio Materiel (Radar). He was then sent to New Guinea and then to the Philippines where he was a rare survivor of Malaria. Carroll received his 55-year certificate from IBEW, Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 134 Chicago, in September 2006.

Preceded in death are his Father, Sydney Collins of Metropolis, Illinois, his Mother, Fellice Biggs Collins of Chicago, two infant daughters, Debbie and Mary, and his wife of 45 years and mother of his children, Rievers Rhodes from Birmingham, Alabama. After her death, Carroll at age 76 married Nancy Rhodes Sigal of Birmingham who was constantly by his side to this end.

Other survivors are his sons, James Stephen (Patty) and Daniel Edward (Nancy), 1 grandson, Adam, 3 granddaughters, Stephanie, Heather, and Rebecca and a step-grandson, Brian Jukubiak all of Chicago, a stepdaughter, Lisa Russell of Mobile and another step-grandson, Randell Russell U.S. Navy.

Carroll was an avid bridge player. He was a member of Homewood Senior Citizen Club where he played twice weekly. He resigned only one month before he was hospitalized on December 1, 2009. He is missed at the club and sorely missed at home which is where his heart was. Carroll was a devoted, interesting, and helpful husband who especially appreciated the culture of our city. He was touched and amazed by the caring people who reached out to him in public because of his handicap.

Interment of his ashes will be April 19, 2010, 11 A.M. at Alabama's National Cemetery, 3133 Highway 119, Montevallo, Alabama, zip code 35115.
